Dennis Allen says who was at fault on play where Saints QB Derek Carr yelled at Chris Olave

New Orleans Saints coach Dennis Allen said Friday that wide receiver Chris Olave was at fault on the incomplete pass that led to Derek Carr showing anger on the field during the fourth quarter of the 31-24 loss to Jacksonville Jaguars.

Carr scrambled out of the pocket and threw well down the sideline, but Olave was nowhere near the ball, having cut his route short.

The quarterback quickly showed his frustration with Olave, shouting down the field, gesturing that he should have kept running on the third-down play.

Trailing 24-16 with 10:44 left, the Saints had to punt it away.

Carr said after the game that he wasn’t talking to Olave, but Allen said Friday that there was a mistake made on the route by the Ohio State product.

“That’s one of those where Chris really got what’s kind of referred to as a bus ticket release …,” Allen said. “Derek thought there was a good chance to get a one-on-one shot with him on the outside line, which in our league if you get a chance to get a good player in a one-on-one matchup, that’s what a lot of this league is about. Chris didn’t run that route the way that it needs to be run. That’s what happened and we ended up having a throw-away there.”

The Saints (3-4) next hit the road for a noon game on Oct. 29 against the Indianapolis Colts.
