No. 1 Tennessee Vols Extend Lead to 18 After Dominant Round Two at NCAA Regional

The Tennessee Volunteers men’s golf team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, extended their commanding lead to 18 strokes after a dominant performance in the second round of the NCAA Regional Championship. The event, hosted at the challenging course of the Yale Golf Club in New Haven, Connecticut, saw the Vols continue to demonstrate why they are the team to beat this postseason.

Heading into round two with a solid cushion, the Volunteers did not ease off the gas. Instead, they built on their momentum with clinical precision and consistency across the board. Tennessee now sits comfortably atop the leaderboard with an 18-stroke advantage over second-place Texas A&M, putting them in a strong position to advance to the NCAA Championship.

Senior standout Caleb Surratt led the charge once again for Tennessee, shooting an impressive 5-under-par 65 to maintain his position at the top of the individual standings. Surratt, who is having a standout season, showed poise and confidence, navigating the course’s tricky greens and tight fairways with ease. His performance was bolstered by teammates Jake Hall and Bryce Lewis, who also posted under-par rounds, keeping Tennessee’s team score firmly in the red.

“We stuck to our game plan and trusted each other,” said head coach Brennan Webb. “The guys are playing with a lot of belief, and it’s showing in the results. But there’s still a lot of golf left, and we’re focused on finishing strong.”

The Volunteers finished the day with a team score of 270 (-10), which added to their first-round total and increased the gap over their nearest rivals. Their combined total now sits at 543 (-17) through 36 holes, a performance that reflects their depth and balance.

Texas A&M, the closest competitor, managed to keep within striking distance early in the round, but a few late bogeys pushed them back. Meanwhile, teams like Wake Forest and Florida State remain in the mix but will need near-perfect rounds in the final day to close the gap.

With only the top five teams from each regional advancing to the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, California, next week, Tennessee has all but secured their spot. However, they will be aiming to maintain their high level of play to carry momentum into the national finals.

The final round of the regional is set for Wednesday, with tee times beginning early in the morning. All eyes will be on the Vols to see if they can cap off one of the most dominant regional performances in recent memory.

For Tennessee, this regional is more than just qualification—it’s a statement. With each round, the Vols are making it clear that they’re not just aiming to participate in the NCAA Championship; they’re gunning for the title.

Stay tuned for full final-round coverage and updates as the road to the NCAA Championship continues.
