The St. Louis Cardinals’ woes continued Wednesday.

After blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning, the Cardinals surrendered three 10th-inning runs in Wednesday’s 8-5 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The series sweep drops their record to a National League-worst 27-42, a shocking prolonged slump from a team expected to vie for its fifth straight playoff appearance.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan called the Cardinals a “disaster” after Wednesday’s loss. Others reacted to their freefall.

“It’s unfortunate, but true,” a fan concurred. “This season has been a complete disaster and it’s still only June. Changes have to be made.”

“I haven’t seen worse baseball played by a St Louis team in my lifetime,” a fan wrote. “This is atrocious and multiple coaches/front office positions should be open for hire by this time tomorrow.”

“Been a very hard year to be a Cardinals fan,” a fan said. “This team is unrecognizable.”

“This is the Cardinals’ most disappointing season in decades,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale declared.

All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado lamented their downslide after Wednesday’s game.

“It’s just bad baseball,” Arenado said, per Bally Sports. “We have been playing bad baseball for a while now. Do I think we can play better baseball with the players we have in here? Sure, but that remains to be seen.”

Despite their doldrums, the Cardinals have a better run differential (-13) than the 34-33 Milwaukee Brewers and 33-35 Cincinnati Reds. A weak NL Central and extra wild-card spots still give them a fighting chance to turn the season around.

Yet they must catch fire soon, starting with this weekend’s series against a New York Mets team also falling well short of expectations this season.
