Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy ‘will NOT get extension and coach 2024 on an expiring deal’ after Dallas retained coach following playoff loss to Packers

Mike McCarthy will not receive a contract extension as he prepares for a do-or-die 2024 with the Cowboys, according to a new report.

The Cowboys, the NFC’s No. 2 seed in this year’s postseason, lost to the Packers at home in the first round of the playoffs, which led to speculation that McCarthy could be fired. Owner Jerry Jones later announced McCarthy would be returning.

Still, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCarthy will coach next season on an expiring deal as he looks to save his job.

The move is an uncommon one as coaches are usually extended or fired before their deals run out.

As noted by Schefter, McCarthy’s predecessor Jason Garrett twice coached on an expiring deal in Dallas – in 2014 and 2019.

Some sources told ESPN that McCarthy could struggle to fill any openings on his coaching staff due to his uncertain future in Dallas.

McCarthy has led Dallas to a 42-25 record in four seasons but has just one playoff win in that span for a 1-3 postseason mark with the Cowboys.
