The scholarship offers recently have started to pile up for Donovan Starr, with more than 15 schools having joined the race for him within the past two months. But he was pleasantly surprised Thursday when Tennessee became the latest program to enter the picture.
The Class of 2025 cornerback from Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn., said he picked up an offer from the Vols on Thursday during a conversation with Tennessee wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope. The Vols became the fourth SEC team to extend an offer to him, joining Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Missouri, all of which have given him offers since Jan. 17.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — As North Carolina’s final home game of the season came to an end last week and standout guard RJ Davis headed off the court at the Smith Center, he made a special stop before disappearing down the tunnel to the Tar Heels’ locker room.
There was retired coach Roy Williams, the UNC luminary who Davis played under early on in his college career, waiting with a hug. It was a brief but striking moment in this exceptional season, and something that the 73-year-old Williams actually had envisioned.
For his belief in me,” Davis said later that night, when asked about the meaning behind that particular embrace. “We talked a lot this past offseason and summer, just about how much of a big year he thought I was going to have. How much he really believed in me, and wanted me to showcase that to everyone. So we just shared a little moment after the game.”
