Cameron Heyward is sticking around in Pittsburgh for four more seasons. The veteran defensive tackle and the organization are finalizing a four year 71.2 million dollar extension tying him to the club until 2024.

Heyward was a first round pick of the Steelers back in 2010 and with his new deal should see his career finish wearing black and gold. Heyward has been named to three Pro Bowl teams and twice named first team All-Pro. A multi year defensive captain, Heyward has tallied 54 career sacks, and 397 tackles wearing black and gold.

Cam, the son of Craig ‘Iron Head’ Heyward was born in Pittsburgh after his fathers illustrious career as a Pitt Panther. With the extension, Heyward will forever be linked to the steel city.

Heyward was set to make $9.5 million for 2020 and carried a more than a $13 million salary cap hit. Exactly how the extension will affect his cap number for this season will be determined once the exact financials are disclosed. Depending on the structure, the Steelers could save more than $5 million towards their 2020 salary cap, but the team may choose to structure the deal to keep a lower hit in 2021 as NFL teams are bracing for a lower salary cap due to the reduction of fans permitted in stadiums.

The new extension should keep Heyward in Pittsburgh for the remainder of his career. Heyward turned 31 years old in May, so his new contract means the Steelers would hold his rights until he nears his 36th birthday.

The move caps off a big day in Pittsburgh where the Steelers reacquired former draft picks Josh Dobbs and Sean Davis before announcing the signing of 14 players to their practice squad.
