With their performance on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t seem to have a chance to defeat the Texans. Everyone save for Najee Harris did not show up to play football, and they were humiliated on both sides of the ball. Pittsburgh had an opportunity to turn the tides at the same moment with a crucial fourth-down play.
On fourth and 1, Mike Tomlin decided to go for it on Houston’s 33-yard line with a little over a minute left in the third quarter. But given the situation, the Steelers couldn’t have designed a worse play.
With Najee Harris running nicely and absolutely no success via the air, Kenny Pickett stepped into shotgun formation and ordered a passing play that lacked even a play-action look. Pickett rushed to his left and was sacked because no one was open.
His left leg became stuck beneath the defender throughout the procedure, resulting in a bruised bone and strained knee.
Even though Pickett shares some of the blame, there’s no denying that the Steelers could have prevented this injury if they hadn’t made such a stupid play on fourth down. Mike Tomlin fielded questions over this dubious choice during his press conference on Tuesday.
