Texas Tech Head Coach Makes History, Donates Entire $3.5M Bonus and Endorsements to Charity and Homeless Support

In a groundbreaking act of generosity, Texas Tech University’s head football coach, Joey McGuire, has donated his entire $3.5 million in bonuses and endorsement earnings to charitable causes, focusing heavily on organizations that support the homeless across Texas.
Coach McGuire, who has gained national attention for revitalizing the Red Raiders football program, made the announcement during a press conference at Jones AT&T Stadium. “Football has given me a platform, but it’s the people—this community—that truly matter,” McGuire said. “This donation is my way of giving back and helping those who don’t always have someone in their corner.”
The donation will be distributed to several nonprofit organizations that provide housing, food, mental health support, and job training for the homeless. Some of the funds will also go toward youth education and prevention programs to help address the root causes of homelessness.
Texas Tech President Dr. Lawrence Schovanec praised McGuire’s contribution, calling it “a powerful reminder of how leadership extends beyond the field.” He added, “Joey McGuire is not only a great coach but also a great human being who represents the spirit of Texas Tech.”
This historic gesture comes on the heels of another major philanthropic moment for the university. In 2024, NFL star and Texas Tech alumnus Patrick Mahomes, along with his wife Brittany, donated $5 million to the school’s athletic department. That donation completed the funding for the $242 million South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center, and resulted in Mahomes’ name being added to the quarterback meeting room and the coordinator’s office.
McGuire’s donation, however, is unique in that it will benefit communities beyond campus borders. Homeless shelters, food pantries, and transitional housing programs across West Texas will directly receive funding. Maria Lopez, director of the Lubbock Homeless Outreach Center, said the impact will be “life-changing” for the people they serve. “This kind of support means expanded services, more beds, and better care,” she said. “Coach McGuire has given us—and the people we help—hope.”
As the Red Raiders gear up for the upcoming season, McGuire’s generosity is serving as a source of inspiration not only to his players but to the broader college athletics community. His bold move redefines what it means to be a leader and a role model in college sports.
For McGuire, the message is simple: “If you’re in a position to help, do it. That’s how we change lives.”
