    1. The Meridian Mustangs girls’ basketball team made history on their way to securing their first-ever regional title, defeating Roscommon 37-26 in the Division 3 regional final at Beal City High School. The victory not only marked a major achievement for the program but also highlighted the resilience and skill of the Mustangs, who defied expectations despite significant challenges throughout the season.

Coming into the game, the Mustangs faced an uphill battle. They had lost most of their starting lineup from the previous year, which could have been a major setback for many teams. However, under the leadership of head coach Tanner Smith, the team came together to form a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest level. Coach Smith’s ability to adapt and guide the team through this transition was critical to their success.

One of the standout performances came from senior Halen McLaughlin, who was the driving force behind the Mustangs’ offensive attack. McLaughlin scored an impressive 24 points in the game, leading her team with both poise and precision. Her scoring ability, combined with her leadership on the floor, helped keep the Mustangs focused and energized throughout the contest.

However, it wasn’t just the offense that secured the win. The Mustangs’ defense played a pivotal role in the victory. Their ability to clamp down on Roscommon’s offensive plays, disrupting their rhythm and forcing turnovers, was crucial. The defensive effort not only limited Roscommon’s scoring opportunities but also helped build momentum for Meridian’s offense.

    1. With the win, the Mustangs now boast a 23-3 record and are heading to the state quarterfinals, where they will face a tough opponent in Calumet. The team’s victory in the regional final has ignited excitement in the Meridian community, and the Mustangs are now just two wins away from a potential state championship. This historic victory has marked a new chapter for the program, and their journey is far from over.
