PITTSBURGH, PA — June 29, 2025 — The Pittsburgh Steelers have locked in one of the NFL’s most dominant defensive forces for the foreseeable future, finalizing a massive four-year, $170 million contract extension with star edge rusher T.J. Watt. The historic deal includes an eye-popping $130 million in guaranteed money, setting a new benchmark among defensive players and making Watt one of the highest-paid athletes in league history.

The agreement places Watt ahead of long-time rival Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns, whose own contract extension last year totaled $160 million. Watt’s new deal, which will keep him in Pittsburgh through the 2029 season, not only reaffirms his status as the cornerstone of the Steelers’ defense but also cements his place among the elite in NFL history.

Watt, 30, has been a force since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2017. Known for his relentless motor, explosive speed, and game-changing ability off the edge, Watt has earned multiple All-Pro selections and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. He currently holds the Steelers’ franchise record for career sacks, having surpassed James Harrison’s mark in 2023.

“This is a special day not only for T.J. but for our entire organization,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “T.J. exemplifies what it means to be a Steeler – toughness, leadership, and a relentless commitment to excellence. We’re thrilled he’ll be continuing his journey in Pittsburgh.”

The contract extension comes after weeks of speculation regarding Watt’s future in Pittsburgh, with negotiations reportedly centered around the structure of guaranteed money. Sources close to the team say the Steelers were determined to reward Watt’s sustained dominance and locker room leadership, ultimately agreeing to the record-setting terms over the weekend.

For Watt, the deal is a testament to years of elite production. He has amassed 102 career sacks, 27 forced fumbles, and 12 fumble recoveries in just eight seasons. Despite dealing with injuries in 2022 and 2024, Watt remains one of the most disruptive defenders in the league.

“I’ve said from the start that I want to finish my career in Pittsburgh,” Watt said during Monday’s press conference. “This organization took a chance on me, and I’ve tried to give everything I have every day. I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity and excited for what’s next.”

With the extension, the Steelers have ensured their defense will continue to be built around Watt, who has been instrumental in maintaining Pittsburgh’s identity as a defensive powerhouse. The move also signals the team’s commitment to contending for championships under head coach Mike Tomlin, who praised Watt as “a generational player and leader.”

Watt’s deal not only resets the market for edge rushers but may also influence upcoming negotiations for other elite defenders across the league, including Micah Parsons and Nick Bosa. For now, the Steelers — and their fans — can rest easy knowing their defensive cornerstone is here to stay.
