Steve Kerr never planned on his 10-year Warriors tenure

Steve Kerr‘s tenure with the Golden State Warriors has been highly successful. He has led the franchise to four championships during his 10 years leading the team.

However, he never planned on such a long stay in the Bay Area. In fact, he thought he would be the head coach for a maximum of five years.

The Warriors head coach revealed his original expectations during a recent interview with NBC Sports Bay Area. Kerr also noted how Ron Adams and Alvin Gentry played significant roles in helping him get settled in his new position as the team’s head coach.

There was part of me that was thinking, ‘All right, I’ll go five years and go back to San Diego and surf and play golf and that would be it,’ ” Kerr Said “And hopefully, I’ll make it five years. Maybe they’ll fire me before that. Who knows?”

Kerr won five NBA championships as a player, three with the Chicago Bulls between 1996 and 1998. And then another two with the San Antonio Spurs in 1999 and 2003. As such, the Warriors front office knew it was hiring a coach who understood what it takes to climb to the mountain top.

Kerr has rewarded their faith and could continue adding to his trophy haul before his tenure with the franchise is over. Golden State will continue the new NBA season on Nov. 1 when it takes on the Sacramento Kings for the second time this season.
