Crystal Palace are approaching the summer transfer window from a position of relative stability, but the club still faces several important decisions as Pierre Sage begins work as Oliver Glasner’s successor.
Unlike many Premier League sides, Palace do not require wholesale changes. The core of the squad remains intact, only a handful of players face uncertain futures and there are no glaring weaknesses in the starting XI. However, last season exposed a lack of depth that ultimately prevented the club from building on its historic European success.
Injuries to key players including Daichi Kamada, Daniel Munoz and Eddie Nketiah, combined with Ismaila Sarr’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations, left Palace stretched during crucial periods of the campaign. Although the Eagles secured a 13th consecutive season in the Premier League, their form dipped significantly during the second half of the year.
Dean Henderson remains one of the first names on the teamsheet and is expected to continue as Palace’s undisputed number one. Behind him, Walter Benitez’s future is less certain, with the club potentially willing to listen to offers should a suitable opportunity arise.
Defensively, Palace appear well positioned despite the departure of Marc Guehi earlier in the year. Chris Richards, Chadi Riad and highly-rated youngster Jaydee Canvot are expected to form the foundation of the club’s back line moving forward.
Questions remain over Maxence Lacroix, however. The French defender enjoyed another strong season and earned international recognition. While Palace are under no pressure to sell, his ambitions and growing reputation could attract significant interest from elsewhere.
At wing-back, Tyrick Mitchell remains a key figure and is considered untouchable. Daniel Munoz’s situation is more complicated. Injuries disrupted his campaign and, at 30, Palace may have to consider their long-term options should an attractive offer arrive.
In midfield, the biggest talking point surrounds Adam Wharton. The England international continues to attract admirers after another impressive season. Palace have no desire to sell and would only consider offers at a premium level, but there is a growing recognition that a major transfer fee could fund the next phase of the club’s development.
Daichi Kamada’s future also remains unresolved as discussions over a new contract continue.
Further forward, Palace are determined to retain Ismaila Sarr, who enjoyed a sensational campaign and established himself as the club’s most influential attacking player. There is little expectation that he will leave this summer.
Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future is less certain. With only one year remaining on his contract, Palace must decide whether to cash in or continue building around a striker who remains one of the most difficult players in the squad to replace.
Ultimately, while Palace are not planning a major rebuild, this summer could still prove pivotal. The decisions made regarding players such as Wharton, Lacroix and Mateta may shape the club’s direction under Pierre Sage for years to come.
