Crystal Palace’s search for a replacement for Maxence Lacroix has taken another twist, with discussions surrounding the defender’s proposed move to Chelsea continuing behind the scenes.
As talks progress between the two Premier League clubs, Palace have been weighing up several defensive options while preparing for Lacroix’s expected switch to Stamford Bridge following the Club World Cup.
An interesting development has now emerged from those negotiations.
“Rumours suggest Crystal Palace were offered the chance to sign one of Chalobah, Badiashile, Disasi or Fofana, but decided against pursuing any of them.”
Chelsea are understood to have explored the possibility of including one of their central defenders as part of the wider discussions, with Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Wesley Fofana all linked as potential options.
Despite the experience available, Palace are believed to have looked elsewhere as they shape the squad under new head coach Pierre Sage.
The south London club are thought to be prioritising younger players capable of developing into long-term starters, rather than pursuing established defenders who could command significant wages.
Another Chelsea player did attract Palace’s attention.
“The Eagles instead showed interest in highly-rated youngster Josh Acheampong, though Chelsea have no intention of letting him leave.”
Acheampong has been regarded as one of Chelsea’s brightest academy prospects and is viewed as an important part of the club’s future plans. Palace explored whether there was any possibility of bringing the teenager to Selhurst Park, but Chelsea have made it clear they are not prepared to sanction his departure.
With that avenue closed, Palace have turned their attention elsewhere.
The Eagles are now pressing ahead with a move for Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell, who has emerged as the club’s preferred choice to strengthen the heart of their defence.
Cresswell has impressed since leaving Leeds United for France, establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s standout young centre-backs through a series of consistent performances.
His development has attracted interest from several clubs, but Palace are understood to be leading the race as they look to complete their defensive rebuild before the new season.
Pierre Sage is believed to be a strong admirer of the England Under-21 international after following his progress closely during his time coaching in Ligue 1.
The Palace manager sees Cresswell as a player capable of making an immediate impact while offering significant potential for further improvement over the coming years.
