🚨 Fresh off today’s early press briefing, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ General Manager announced that Mitch Marner is poised to re-sign with the team on a three-year, $54 million contract extension. The GM emphasized that Marner’s return will be instrumental in boosting the team’s performance…………….

In a major announcement that could reshape the outlook for the Toronto Maple Leafs next season, General Manager Brad Treliving confirmed during an early morning press briefing that star winger Mitch Marner is set to re-sign with the team. The new contract extension is reported to be a three-year deal worth a staggering $54 million — an average annual value (AAV) of $18 million — making Marner one of the highest-paid players in the NHL.

“Securing Mitch was a top priority for us heading into this offseason,” Treliving stated to a packed media room at Scotiabank Arena. “His skill, vision, and leadership on and off the ice are crucial to our organization. This deal reflects our belief in his ability to help bring a championship to Toronto.”

The new contract comes after weeks of speculation surrounding Marner’s future with the club. With only one year remaining on his previous six-year deal, rumors had swirled that the Leafs might consider trading the 27-year-old All-Star in order to shake up the roster after another disappointing second-round playoff exit. Instead, the team has doubled down on its core.

Marner, drafted fourth overall by Toronto in 2015, has spent his entire NHL career with the Maple Leafs. Over the past nine seasons, he has racked up over 650 points and become one of the league’s premier playmakers. Known for his elite hockey IQ, puck-handling skills, and relentless work ethic, Marner has long been a fan favorite and key piece of Toronto’s “Core Four,” alongside Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares.

“I’m incredibly grateful to continue representing this team and this city,” Marner said in a brief video statement released shortly after the announcement. “Toronto is home for me. I truly believe in the direction we’re headed and I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to bring a Cup here.”

At $18 million per season, Marner’s new contract will make him the second-highest paid player in the NHL by AAV, behind only Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers. The deal signals a clear vote of confidence from Leafs management in the team’s core — and perhaps more importantly, a bold commitment to keeping its top talent together amid salary cap pressures.

Some analysts have raised eyebrows at the deal’s size, noting that the Leafs will need to make cap-space adjustments elsewhere to accommodate Marner’s raise. The contract includes full no-movement protection for the first two years, with a limited no-trade clause in the final season.

“It’s a big number, but that’s the cost of elite talent,” said former NHL executive Brian Burke during a TSN panel following the announcement. “Marner is worth it. You don’t find many players who can drive offense the way he does, kill penalties, and set the tone for your team’s culture.”

    What’s Next for the Leafs?

With Marner locked in, the attention now turns to how the Leafs will build around their high-paid core. Defense and goaltending remain question marks, and the team is expected to pursue upgrades in both areas during free agency and potential trades this summer.

“We’re not done yet,” Treliving hinted. “This is a significant step, but we know there’s still work to be done to make this team a true contender.”

As fans gear up for what promises to be a pivotal 2025–26 season, the message is clear: the Leafs are betting big on Mitch Marner — and the belief that their championship window is still very much open.
