Will Kyle Shanahan and Bill Belichick be paired at the 49ers?
There has been talk in recent weeks about Bill Belichick, the former head coach of the New England Patriots, perhaps joining the coaching staff of the San Francisco 49ers. After the 49ers’ Super Bowl 58 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, Steve Wilks, their defensive coordinator, was fired, a rumor began to circulate.
It appears that Belichick and the 49ers would be a good fit. Belichick spent 24 years as a head coach of the Patriots, where he became one of the best defensive-minded coaches in NFL history by consistently fielding top-10 defenses. The 49ers are always a threat to win the Super Bowl, but they haven’t quite succeeded in doing so in previous years, so adding Belichick may be an interesting move.
The notion of Belichick joining the 49ers gained further attention when old comments made by current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan resurfaced. In January 2019, Shanahan expressed his openness to making coaching staff changes if a legendary figure like Belichick became available. He stated, “If Bill Belichick became available two weeks from now and said he wants to come here… that would probably be a smart decision to do that.”
With Belichick now a free agent after being overlooked in the latest NFL head coach hiring cycle, the opportunity for Shanahan to bring him on board seems ripe. The Patriots’ track record under Belichick speaks for itself, with his defensive strategies effectively neutralizing some of the league’s most potent offenses during New England’s dominant years
