According to a report by 90min, Rangers are hoping to sign Ben Godfrey, an out-of-favour Everton defender, during the January transfer window.

Ben Godfrey, a defender for Everton, is a target for Rangers in January, ahead of Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Considering that the 25-year-old has played just one minute in the Premier League this season, the news outlet claims on their website (8 November) that the Toffees are willing to sell the player this winter.

But Rangers will face competition from the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Burnley to get a deal done, although he wants to leave for more regular football.

Everton defender Ben Godfrey is emerging as a transfer target for several Premier League sides, including Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, sources have confirmed to 90min,” they said.

“Godfrey is keen to reignite his flailing top-flight career and Everton are now willing to listen to offers for him.

“Godfrey is also wanted by Bournemouth, Burnley and Crystal Palace, while Scottish side Rangers are interested as well.”

Godfrey has no doubt been struggling for regular football in recent times, and has found himself way down the pecking order at Goodison Park under Sean Dyche.

But the same could have been said about Jack Butland before he came to Ibrox and he is arguably our player of the season so far this year, proving that that shouldn’t be a hurdle to a deal if the manager is interested.

Godfrey is very good on the ball, can play at full-back too if necessary and is also a very athletic footballer which would make him a fantastic option at the back for our front foot football.

Leon Balogun is past his best despite good performances in recent weeks, while John Souttar and Ben Davies have suffered with a lot of injuries since joining the club in the summer of 2022.

Connor Goldson is also getting on a bit now, and with regular football on offer plus the opportunity to play regularly in Europe means we could well prove to be an attractive option for him if we can make the financials work.
