Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer believe former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso could return to Anfield.
The Spanish player spent 5 years on Merseyside, starting his coaching career with the Real Madrid youth team in 2018, before becoming Real Sociedad’s B team coach before leading the German club Bayer Leverkusen over a year ago.
His side have started the campaign impressively, winning nine of their 10 Bundesliga matches, the latest being a 3-2 away win over Hoffenheim at the weekend.
He also led Die Schwarzroten to the Europa League semi-finals last season and won all 3 matches in this year’s tournament.
With the Red Devils also unbeaten in Group E, the possibility of reuniting with Alonso in the later stages of the tournament could become a reality, as Jurgen Klopp hopes to add the trophy he has cherished for eight years in Anfield.
Klopp, 56, has signed a new contract with Liverpool in 2022, extending his stay until the summer of 2026, with his previous contract set to expire next summer.
But beyond that, Lineker and Shearer have identified Champions League winner Alonso as a potential Klopp replacement in the coming years.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: “He’s getting a lot of plaudits, isn’t he?
