Firefighters found a woman stabbed to death after rushing to fight a Daytona Beach apartment fire early Tuesday, while her three young children were taken to a hospital in critical condition, where the youngest, an infant, died. Authorities have not released the baby’s cause of death or the types of injuries, or the current condition of the two surviving children, ages 4 and 5.
“This is a terrible incident two days away from a family vacation that focuses on family,” said the Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young told reporters at the scene.
The mother’s name has not been released and police are investigating the fire as a homicide, Young said. Authorities have not named the suspect. Young said the fire started around midnight Tuesday at Countryside Apartments and the child was found in a crib near his mother
. Orlando WKMG reports that state investigators believe the apartment fire was intentionally set. The police were also treated for smoke inhalation, according to authorities.
