Braeden Davis is the No. 8 seed at 133! Will take on No. 25 Kurt Phipps of Bucknell in the first round….

Penn State’s sophomore wrestler, Braeden Davis, has secured the No. 8 seed at 133 pounds for the upcoming NCAA Wrestling Championships, set to commence on March 20, 2025, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. In the opening round, Davis is slated to face Bucknell’s No. 25 seed, senior Kurt Phipps.

Davis enters the tournament with a 12-5 record this season, marking his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. Last year, he competed at 125 pounds as the top seed but did not place. This season, Davis moved up to the 133-pound category, where he finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships. His performance at the Big Tens included a quarterfinal loss and a pin in the third-place match, reflecting some challenges during the season.

His opponent, Kurt Phipps, boasts a 22-8 record and recently clinched the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) championship. Phipps, a senior, brings experience and momentum into the tournament, making the first-round matchup a compelling contest.

The winner of the Davis-Phipps bout is projected to face the No. 9 seed, Braxton Brown, in the second round. Davis and Brown previously clashed in the Big Ten consolation semifinals, with Davis emerging victorious in a closely contested 9-7 match. A potential rematch could be pivotal for Davis’s progression in the tournament.

Looking ahead, if Davis advances past the second round, he is anticipated to meet the top seed, Illinois’ Lucas Byrd, in the quarterfinals. This path underscores the challenging bracket Davis faces, requiring peak performance to navigate through to the later stages.

Penn State’s wrestling team enters the championships with high expectations, having secured four No. 1 seeds across different weight classes. Davis’s performance will be integral to the Nittany Lions’ pursuit of team success at the national level.

As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on Davis to see if he can capitalize on his seeding and navigate a challenging bracket to achieve All-American status or contend for a national title.
