Twins will sign an RPG. Jay Jackson: Is He Real?
I’m a die-hard baseball fan. I am a huge fan of the entire league and watch a lot of games outside of my hometown team in addition to our beloved Twins. I play fantasy baseball quite a bit. I’ve written a blog post about how much I love baseball video games. I think of myself as a pretty well-rounded baseball fan who knows a fair amount about most teams. Therefore, please realize that I say this with great weight:

Nor is this a case of a “low-level prospect thrown into a trade”! The real Jackson is thirty-six years old. He was a top 100 prospect in 2010 and was drafted in 2008; he made his debut in 2015! Despite being around for a long time, he has managed to avoid my baseball gaze. Never poor enough to give up on the game entirely, but never good enough to get regular playing time.
After getting past that, let’s discuss the player themselves. It would be an understatement to say that Jackson, who is real, is a journeyman. With the addition of two NPB teams, the Twins will be his tenth MLB team.
His narrative is not unique. The real Jackson has pitched extremely well in AAA throughout his career, but his major league stats have always been mediocre. He was frequently sent out to make room for younger, more highly-regarded players, and as he didn’t see much MLB action until he was 31, he frequently found himself at the bottom of the roster hierarchy. With a much stronger 2023, the Twins believe he has the potential to be a major league player.
The real Jackson pitched 29.2 innings in 2023 with a 2.12 ERA, 0.910 WHIP, 23.3% strikeout rate, and just 7.8% walk rate. He was not as well-liked by FIP and SIERA, as both metrics almost doubled his ERA. He is a genuine two-pitch pitcher with a good slider and a lackluster fastball (stop me if you’ve heard this before). Their type is the Twins.
Jackson had to worry about his newborn son’s health in 2023 as well because he was born 15 weeks early. He consequently frequently traveled between his family in Utah, the Blue Jays in Toronto, and their AAA affiliate in Buffalo. Last month, his son was able to return home in a happy ending.

Although he won’t be ending games anytime soon, Justin Topa, Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, Brock Stewart, and Caleb Thielbar are all vying for late-game opportunities, making Minnesota’s bullpen appear to be among the best in the league. As an actual, hopeless man, Jackson serves as a productive and healthy buffer against guys like Josh Staumont, Jorge Alcala, and Kody Funderburk, all of whom can still be sent to St. Paul.
Jay, welcome to Minnesota! You seem like the real deal now.
