From Rejected Trialist to Europe’s Hottest Prospect: The Extraordinary Rise of Yan Diomande
Only a few years ago, Yan Diomande was an unknown teenager searching desperately for an opportunity to make his mark in football. Today, the Ivory Coast international is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the game, with some of Europe’s biggest clubs closely following his remarkable progress.
The 19-year-old forward has enjoyed a stunning rise since arriving in Spain, but his journey to the top has been far from straightforward.
According to former Leganés manager Borja Jiménez, the club knew they had uncovered a special talent long before the rest of Europe took notice.
“Tenemos al futuro Messi”.
Those were the words spoken by Leganés president Jeff Luhnow at the end of 2023 when discussing a teenage Diomande, who was then playing in Africa without a professional club. Although Leganés had already secured an agreement to bring him to Spain, they were unable to officially sign him until he turned 18.
When he finally arrived in Madrid in late 2024, it took only a matter of days for those at the club to recognise the extent of his talent.

Before his move to Leganés, Diomande’s career had been defined by setbacks and rejection. Despite impressing during trials and earning praise from respected figures in the game, clubs repeatedly passed up the opportunity to sign him.
“Bournemouth, Chelsea, Rangers, Olympiakos, Crystal Palace… Michael Olise se acercó a mí y me dijo ‘eres muy bueno’. Pero aun así ninguno me quiso.”
Eventually, his visa expired and he was forced to return to Africa without securing a contract.
“Mi visado se terminó y me mandaron de vuelta a África. Lloré muchísimo, y unas semanas después firmé por el Leganés.”
Once in Spain, however, his impact was immediate. Jiménez recalls having to remove him from a training match because he feared opposition players would become frustrated by his brilliance.
“Estaba regateando a todo el mundo, había marcado un gol.”
Within days, the youngster had been promoted to train with the first team.
Yet as his football career was beginning to flourish, tragedy struck. Shortly after fulfilling a lifelong dream by making his debut at the Santiago Bernabéu, Diomande received devastating news from home. His younger sister had died suddenly.
“Tu hermana se ha ido, alguien puso algo en su bebida y no ha despertado. Tenía 15 años.”
Those who worked closely with him were astonished by the strength and maturity he showed during such a difficult period.
Now at RB Leipzig, whom he joined in 2025, Diomande has continued his rapid development. After registering 12 goals and nine assists during a breakthrough campaign, his value has skyrocketed and Europe’s elite clubs are once again circling.
“If yo fuera el Madrid, lo firmaría seguro. Seguro.”
As speculation surrounding his future intensifies, Diomande remains driven by a promise he made to his late sister.
“Tú siempre decías que yo podía ser mejor que Cristiano. Si le veo, le diré ‘hola’ de tu parte. Voy a demostrar que tenías razón o moriré en el intento. Te lo prometo.”
