Speculation surrounding the future of Jean-Philippe Mateta has intensified following reports that Oliver Glasner would push for a reunion with the Crystal Palace striker should he take charge of AC Milan.
The Austrian coach, who enjoyed considerable success working alongside Mateta during his time at Selhurst Park, is said to regard the French forward as one of the key players capable of improving Milan’s attacking options immediately.
According to reports emerging from Italy, Glasner has already identified areas he would like to strengthen if appointed as AC Milan’s next head coach, with the centre-forward position featuring prominently on his list of priorities. Among the names reportedly discussed is Mateta, a player who flourished under Glasner’s guidance and became one of Palace’s most influential performers.
“If Oliver Glasner were to sign as AC Milan’s new head coach, he would immediately ask the management to reunite him with Mateta.
Glasner made a clear request to strengthen the attack: he wants to work with Mateta again.”
The relationship between coach and player has been one of the more successful partnerships at Crystal Palace in recent years. Since Glasner’s arrival in South London, Mateta developed into a far more complete striker, improving not only his goalscoring output but also his overall contribution to the team’s attacking play.
His movement, hold-up play and ability to lead the line became central to Palace’s system, while his confidence appeared to grow significantly under the Austrian manager. The striker rewarded that faith with a series of decisive performances, quickly becoming a favourite among supporters.
Should Glasner ultimately secure the AC Milan position, it is understandable why he would look towards a player who already understands his tactical demands and playing philosophy. Managers often seek trusted individuals when beginning a new project, particularly at a club where immediate success is expected.
However, convincing Crystal Palace to part with Mateta could prove extremely difficult.
The Frenchman remains one of the club’s most valuable attacking assets and would likely command a significant transfer fee. Palace are also preparing for a new chapter of their own and may be reluctant to weaken the squad by losing one of their most reliable goalscorers.
From Mateta’s perspective, the prospect of joining a club of AC Milan’s stature would undoubtedly attract attention. The opportunity to compete in Serie A, challenge for major honours and reunite with a manager who helped elevate his career could present an appealing proposition.
Yet there are equally strong reasons for him to remain in South London. Palace continue to progress as a club, and Mateta has established himself as a key figure within the squad.
Whether any formal approach materialises remains to be seen, but if Glasner does arrive at AC Milan, the possibility of a reunion with Mateta is likely to become one of the transfer stories to watch closely in the coming months.
