missing teenagers have been found and 30 sex offenders arrested during a police operation in the New Orleans area of the United States.
The U.S. Marshals Service announced in a press release that 17 arrests were made of individuals charged with sex offender registration violations as part of Operation Boo Dat, an annual multi-agency initiative that ran from mid-October to December 24. According to the press release, all five teenagers found were girls between the ages of 14 and 17 years. Among those arrested was one of the men wanted for raping a 12-year-old girl victim in an abandoned home on New Orleans’ West Bank, US marshals said.
A second man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in June in San Patricio County, Texas, according to U.S. Marshals. One of the missing teenage girls found was a 16-year-old runaway from her home in Marrero, New Orleans, who allegedly stole a relative’s car and handgun, according to the release. The girl was found in a home occupied by “several adults, including a strip club dancer,” the U.S. Marshals said.
The other two found were siblings, ages 15 and 16, who were found in a Baton Rouge residence and who “may be victims of criminal sexual activity by adults,” U.S. Marshals said.
“During Operation Boo Dat, over one hundred sex offenders were tried in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes,” the U.S. Marshals Service said. “When conducting a sex offender’s compliance check, law enforcement must go to the address of the sex offender’s listed residence to verify that the person still lives at the given address. Countless hours of research are often required during and after a compliance review.
The U.S. Marshals Service said it conducted the operation with the New Orleans Police Department, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Louisiana State Police and the USMS New Task Force Orleans.
