The New Orleans Saints currently sit atop the somewhat pathetic AFC South division with a 5-5 record entering Week 11. After receiving some bad news in the Week 10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, he is now officially a weapon in the passing game while at least the next four weeks, according to Adam Schefter. ?
Michael Thomas, the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year, 2 x All-Pro and 3 x Pro Bowler, was once considered arguably the best wide receiver in the National Football League.
He had a unique connection with the ultra-accurate future Hall of Famer Drew Brees and was truly unguarded on those famous 5-yard slant routes in his prime.
Since receiving a whopping 5-year, $100 million contract in 2020, Michael Thomas has only amassed 1,057 yards over the past four years due to multiple injuries. This year, however, when Thomas finally entered camp fit and healthy, he began to look more like his former self, racking up 448 yards on the year. He’s also been much more consistent than in recent years, reaching at least 42 yards in all but 2 games this season.
It’s obviously a big blow to Thomas, who worked so hard and so long to get back into this position with (sort of) a contending Saints team to get back on IR.
As for the New Orleans Saints, while it’s certainly not the news they wanted to hear, they are bolstered by the fact that they have two very capable wide receivers in second-year high draft pick Chris Olave and undrafted speedster Rashid. Shaheed who has developed into a real deep threat weapon for this middling Saints side.
Let’s hope Michael Thomas makes a speedy recovery, while the Saints will be interested to see who becomes quarterback Derek Carr’s new favorite third receiver.
