After 15 friendly matches without a victory, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are looking to win their first international friendly match since 2019.
Less than three days after drawing 2-2 with Saudi Arabia at the same stadium, the Super Eagles will play lowly-ranked Mozambique later today at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira in Portugal.
The Nigerian squad has lost international friendlies sixteen times running if coach Jose Pasiero and his players lose this encounter, which gets underway at 4 p.m. WAT.
The Super Eagles’ most recent encounter with Mozambique took place in January 2014. The Nigerian squad won 4-2 at the end of the match.
Nigeria enters the friendly match having lost five of their previous six encounters. Remarkably, Mozambique has won three and lost three of their previous six friendly matches, giving them the advantage in today’s match.
Since defeating Egypt 1-0 in March 2019 with to an early goal from Paul Onuachu, the Super Eagles have lost nine and drawn six of their previous 15 friendlies, including Friday’s 2-2 tie with Saudi Arabia.
Jose Paseiro’s team had won their last three 2023 AFCON qualification matches by a total of ten goals, kept two clean sheets, and finished first in Group A with 15 points from six games prior to their draw on Friday.
When the Eagles start their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in November, they will be looking to use today’s matchup against Mozambique to snap their losing streak in international friendlies.
