Super Eagles End 15-Match Winless Run With a Win in Mozambique

Nigeria’s Super Eagles defeated Mozambique 3-2 to finally snap their 15-game winning streak in international friendlies.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria lost a league match for the fifteenth consecutive time on Friday, October 13, as they drew 2-2 with Saudi Arabia in Portugal.

Since defeating Egypt 1-0 in March 2019 with to an early goal from Paul Onuachu, the Super Eagles have lost nine and drawn six of their previous 15 friendlies, including Friday’s 2-2 tie with Saudi Arabia.

However, the Super Eagles’ 16th friendly match in the previous four years against Mozambique on Monday, October 16, put a halt to that pattern.

The Nigerian team was able to hold their own against the tenacious Mozambican team, despite the Eagles starting the game without both the injured Victor Osimhen and the in-form Kelechi Iheanacho, who is rumored to have personal matters to settle.

Geny Catamo’s goal in the sixth minute of the exciting match startled Nigeria. Mozambique took the lead early.

They held the advantage until Terem Moffi, who is currently on the roster of OGC Nice, equalized the score with a close-range shot in the 19th minute.

Frank Onyeka’s goal from the edge of the 18-yard box gave Nigeria its first lead of the match at the halfway point.

Mozambique’s situation worsened when Edmilson was sent off in the 38th minute.

A player from Mozambique committed a handball in the penalty area just before the half ended. The referee gave Nigeria a penalties, which Simon Moses scored in injury time to make it 3-1 for the Super Eagles.

Mozambique attempted to mount a comeback in the second half despite being down a man, but all they could muster was a goal in the 55th minute from Faisal Bangal. That made it necessary for Nigeria to win the match 3-2.
