The Baltimore Orioles’ 2024 season ended with disappointment after being swept in the playoffs, and now the team faces difficult decisions regarding several trade deadline acquisitions. Two players, in particular, are unlikely to return due to poor performances and high salary commitments. Closer Craig Kimbrel and designated hitter Eloy Jiménez, both added at the deadline, failed to meet expectations. With Kimbrel’s $13 million option and Jiménez’s $16.5 million option for 2025, the Orioles will likely pass on these costly renewals as they shift focus to their young core for next season.

The Orioles had hoped these veteran players would contribute to a deep playoff run, but their struggles instead became emblematic of the team’s post-deadline shortcomings. Kimbrel, once a dominant closer, failed to maintain consistency, and Jiménez, despite flashes of power, did not provide the offensive boost Baltimore needed in critical moments. Given the expensive team options and underwhelming results, the Orioles are expected to prioritize payroll flexibility and player development going forward.

Additionally, the Orioles have a wealth of young talent ready to take on bigger roles. Players like Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Jackson Holliday represent the future of the franchise. With an eye on development, the front office will likely lean on homegrown talent rather than over-committing to underperforming veterans.

Baltimore’s front office, led by Mike Elias, will also need to address other offseason questions, including arbitration-eligible players and potential free-agent signings. While big-budget moves seem unlikely, the Orioles are expected to explore mid-tier free agents to bolster their roster. The team has already experienced some success in building through its farm system, and the 2024 trade deadline moves, despite their failure to deliver immediate results, could be viewed as part of a broader strategy to remain competitive without overspending.

For the Orioles to advance beyond their current postseason struggles, a combination of strategic player development, measured free-agent signings, and possibly some trades will be necessary. Key players like Felix Bautista, expected back from Tommy John surgery, and other contributors from their core young group will be pivotal in making a stronger push in 2025.
