Damage caused by Storm Debi has caused the closure of Blackpool’s Promenade.

A stretch of the road near to blackpool-tower>Blackpool Tower and the Star Flyer ride has been closed by Lancashire Police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service amid safety fears. That decision came after debris fell from onto the road, causing danger to pedestrians and road users.

The tram service has also been affected, with journeys no longer able to reach that section and police are urging people to avoid the area. A spokesperson said: “Police are assisting the fire service dealing with debris in the road on the Promenade near Tower Dungeons.

Please can you avoid the area if possible as it is a danger to the public due to metal sheets blowing onto the front. Lancashire Fire and Rescue sent a response to the scene but has since left.

A Blackpool Council spokesperson said: “ The Promenade is currently closed between Talbot Square and New Bonny Street due to damaged signage on the Tower building. Contractors are on site ready to make the area safe once the winds have dropped.”

A spokesperson for Blackpool Transport said: “Due to extreme weather we are having to curtail service on our tramway. Trams will currently only serve stops between North Pier and Fleetwood Ferry. At this time, No trams are running further south than North Pier
