Colorado head coach Deion Sanders turns to a former NFL coach with a less-than-stellar track record to improve his team’s offense.
Reportedly, quality control analyst Pat Shurmur, a former Giants coach, will call games starting Saturday against Oregon State.
After a 3-0 start, Colorado has lost four of its last five games and the offense isn’t moving the ball effectively.
Shurmur went 9-23 as head coach of the Giants in 2018-19.
He has a career record of 19-46, and his offensive history is spotty to say the least.
In his 13 seasons as an offensive coordinator or head coach, his offense (though defined by yards scored) has ranked in the top 10 three times — in 2013 and 2014 with the Eagles of Philadelphia and in 2017 with the Minnesota Vikings.
For most of his remaining years, his offenses ranked in the bottom third, including when he was the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2021, when they ranked 19th in yards and 23rd in points.
Shurmur is not coaching in 2022.
According to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, Shurmur will be promoted to full-time coach and one full-time coach will be demoted.
Offensive coordinator Sean Lewis will relay calls, McMurphy said.
